This event takes a huge amount of effort to organise and we are always looking for willing hands to help us deliver a first-class day not only for runners but for the community of Chelmsford.

We raise thousands of pounds for our local charities and aim to provide a fun day out for all the family as well as the runners.
The race is designed over 10 miles starting and finishing at the Millenium Centre in Great Baddow. There are 41 junctions and points where we are obliged by UKA licence to station marshals to assist runners navigating the course. Depending on the junction complexities Marshals are usually in two’s or three’s and are given a full verbal and written briefing of their responsibilities before the race.

The time needed to be a marshal is usually from 0930 – 1230 on Race day so if you can spare time for this please get in touch.

The Great Baddow Parish Council and Chelmsford City Council give us permission to allow car parking on the Millenium Centre grounds on the day of the race. If you can spare a couple of hours on the day usually from 0900hrs to help with this please get in touch.
Whilst there are stallholders providing refreshments for the public we
need volunteers to help provide refreshments for all of our groundworkers on the day. Again if you can help with this please get in touch.
This is for the ‘early birds’. Setting up the Millenium Centre field for the start and finish of the race and marking the field for siting the emergency vehicles, broadcast facilities, stall holders, information centre, bag drop, late entry posts and a host of other facilities require a large number of volunteers. This work usually starts at 0500hrs to be ready for the race start at 1000hrs. Then of course, after the race ends at about 1230hrs we need to take it all down!

If you can help with this please get in touch.

The Great Baddow Races were started in 1982 by Bob Hendrie. A keen runner himself, Bob is still closely involved in the organisation of the event.

For 30 years, the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Mildmay has been solely responsible for the organisation of the races. Since 2018, another Rotary Club – Chelmsford Rivermead – has become its organisational partner.

The Races have been started over the years by some famous Olympic and Paralympic athletes, including Fatima Whitbread, Danny Crates and Eamonn Martin and by personalities from radio and TV such as Dave Monk.

Runners have come from all over the country. As well as the Home Counties and East Anglia, they have come from as far north as Yorkshire and Scotland.

Car parking is available at the Millennium Centre grounds on the day of the race. We can accept no responsibility for any loss or damage to vehicles or property left with vehicles.

A temporary road closure will exist on 19th May 2024 from 10.00 am to 11.45 pm of the High Street from its junction with Church Street and its junction with Vicarage Lane and Galleywood Road. Diversion signs will be in place.

Our sponsors allow us, with their generosity, to put on this magnificent Community event. We are extremely grateful for their kind support.

Each year the complex organisation of the Baddow Races requires help from many individuals and organisations. The Rotary clubs of Chelmsford Mildmay and Chelmsford Rivermead share the responsibility of putting this event together and we are supported by our sponsors. Please find more information on the Get Involved page.

The start and finish of the Baddow Races is at the Millenium Ground. At the site there are many activities for all the family to enjoy whilst the races are happening so come along and support out charities by donating whilst enjoying a fun day out.

Runners with disabilities should be aware that the Races commence with a lap around the grounds on grass and finish on grass.  We ask those with disabilities to use their judgement as to their ability to manage the course taking into account gradients and that the route is open to traffic. If you have a disability that requires assistance, for example deafness or blindness (accompanied) please email us at info@old.baddowraces.co.uk  and we will endeavour to help.
